BEELINE
Target Users: Remote Workers
Timeline: 12 weeks, March - June 2023
Project Type: Submission for UX Awards
Design by: Diane Shin and Jean Chung
Context: Beeline was an experimental endeavour. We aimed to leverage our strengths to create a more powerful piece collaboratively.
My Role: It included several key responsibilities such as leading the process, conducting research, designing the interface, contributing ideas, and making timely decisions to move the project forward.
Problem
Remote workers are dealing with problems like less engagement, communication issues, and struggles with work-life balance. The use of different tools for various tasks adds to these challenges, creating a significant problem for the user experience in remote work.
The Objective
Our objective is to design a pioneering platform that fosters effortless collaboration, amplifies creativity and concentration, and pushes the boundaries of virtual work environments to tackle the obstacles faced by workers and elevate their experience within the workplace.
Goal: To provide a fresh perspective on remote work, enabling users to execute tasks more smoothly and perform better by eliminating the need to use multiple tools by including unique interactive features and functionalities of commonly used remote tools.
User-Centred Task + Project Management
Centred around the user's needs, offering personalized suggestions and providing process monitoring capabilities to organize tasks for healthier workflows and increased productivity.
Live 3D Virtual Meeting Rooms
Fosters a sense of connectedness and creativity through virtual spaces allowing enhanced collaboration.
Scheduling
Beeline allows users to set times to open and close rooms. Also has features for easy scheduling and task management by learning user preferences.
Advanced Communication
Video recording, messaging, and AI-generated meeting notes, designed to overcome physical distance, boost efficiency, and minimize the risk of miscommunication in the workplace.
Research: Understanding the Current Workplace
We gathered valuable information from 28 potential users and conducted detailed interviews with a select few. Our goal was to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the demographics, needs, challenges, preferences, and behaviors of workers in various positions.
User Research Insight & Problem Solving
Creating personas based on the gathered data allowed us to organize the unmet needs by identifying common challenges and patterns. This research helped us set goals and move forward effectively. It became apparent that remote workers faced varying struggles and had different needs based on their positions within the workplace.
The Design Process
The process involved utilizing various tools and methods, such as ideating and sketching to transform them into interactive prototypes using Figma, conceptualizing and designing 3D spaces with MODO, and creating characters and visual elements through sketching and designing on Illustrator.
Visual Branding + Style
Why ‘Beeline’?
Beeline was inspired by the term, “Taking the B-line” which emphasizes someone's fast movement to take the shortest distance to reach their destination.
With an imaginative twist, we incorporated the concept of a bee as a symbol of fast movement and efficiency, to represent the phrase “taking the B-line”. This approach guided the design direction of the platform, resulting in a cohesive visual style. We aimed to create a user-friendly interface that enhances user engagement, and satisfaction. By embracing this unique visual style, we offer remote workers and teams, a visually appealing and memorable experience. Below are interactive spaces for collaboration.
Style Guide
BeeLine aims to deliver an intuitive and visually appealing interface while using consistent guidelines to maintain a cohesive visual experience to serve as a reference for designers and developers. The design includes a vibrant but simple colour palette, clear typography, simplified iconography, and a grid-based layout. It also includes playful but subtle animations to enhance user interactions, while accessibility considerations ensure inclusivity.
My Takeaway
My main takeaway from this project would be that I got to hone my design leadership skills while learning the value of collaboration and effective communication in remote work. I also gained a deeper awareness of the challenges and opportunities within remote work, equipping me to guide future projects with more efficiency and make better decisions.
In conclusion, we hope to continue to innovate on this project to imagine a future that includes a user-centric platform that adapts to the evolving landscape of remote work.
Challenges to Opportunities
During the project, Jean and I faced the challenge of being in different time zones. Despite the added difficulty, this situation provided us with a deeper understanding of the problem space. By working with existing remote tools, we gained insights into the challenges faced by remote workers and prioritized their needs based on our firsthand experiences.
